RNF’s ‘delicate’ financial situation was motivation for Yamaha to only want an annual contract

Since arriving in MotoGP in 2019, RNF (formerly Petronas Yamaha SRT) has always worked with Yamaha. The possibility of continuing to race with two M1s was on the table for 2023, but Razlan Razali ended up getting a deal that went beyond next season with Aprilia. Now, with CryptoDATA Tech being the majority shareholder of the Malaysian structure, Razali is more focused on the sports component of his team, which had a very difficult year in 2022, in which it was left without the future support of WithU and without Andrea Dovizioso from the round including Aragon.

According to SPEEDWEEK.com, Lin Jarvis explained why Yamaha wanted to work with RNF through annual contracts. According to the Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, the financial situation of the RNF worried Yamaha in such a way that it was impossible to think about contracts longer than one season.

‘The financial situation of RNF was very, very delicate. However, we suggested continuing to work on the basis of one-year contracts, but Razlan [Razali] wanted more and he got it. He got a good offer from Aprilia. I think the deal is for two years with an option for a further two years. Not a bad offer. I understand why he made that decision and I also understand why Aprilia didn’t miss this opportunity. But Yamaha wanted to extend the cooperation for one year’, the man who is also Team Principal of Yamaha’s MotoGP team.
