New start/finish bridge, track renewal during renovation work
MONTEREY, CA, December 9, 2021 – It’s already one of the best racetracks in the world, but WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca gets even better.
By a 4-1 supermajority, the Monterey County Board of Directors yesterday passed a resolution giving the go-ahead for funding for major renovations to take place over the next 18 months as part of the five-year capital improvement program. The track surface itself will be repaved for the first time since 2007, a new start/finish bridge will be built which will allow for more pedestrian flow and golf cart crossing, and the paddock pavilion at Turn 3 will be significantly upgraded.
The projects timeline will be confirmed in the coming weeks, but the goal remains November 2022 through April 2023. The Laguna Seca Recreation Area, home to the racetrack and scenic campground, is owned by the County of Monterey.
“I would like to thank the supervisors and county staff for paving the way for us to begin much-needed improvements to this world-renowned racetrack and recreation area for generations now and to come,” said John Narigi, President and General Manager of WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway. “The investment is a significant step in keeping this valuable economic engine running smoothly for the benefit of residents and businesses throughout Monterey County.”
A number of business leaders, community groups and service organizations expressed their support for the improvements, which will form the basis for future events and benefit tourism in Monterey County. They echoed the general sentiment that when WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is busy, all businesses – from local owners to international chains – benefit from the increased attendance. In addition, major sponsors added that it is important for the overall brand that the legendary circuit and facilities are continuously improved and modernized.
WeatherTech Raceway has a rich heritage and hosts many of the largest racing organizations in the United States each year. From the motorcycle races of MotoAmerica and AHRMA to the technologically advanced IMSA classes and the open-wheel roar of INDYCAR, the circuit offers plenty of top-notch action every year. The track is also home to the prestigious Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which sees hundreds of historic race cars annually celebrate history.
These improvements ensure that every event at WeatherTech Raceway remains at the highest level of competition for drivers, while also adding features that enhance the fan experience.
