The Moto2 World Championship ended its summer break today with the opening free practice sessions taking place at Silverstone for the Monster Energy British Grand Prix. At the end of opening day, the three Americans, Cameron Beaubier, Joe Roberts, and Sean Dylan Kelly, were eighth, 12th and 25th, respectively.
All three of the former MotoAmerica Champions went quicker in FP2 than in FP1 with American Racing’s Beaubier improving the most as he cut 1.2 seconds off his morning best. Beaubier’s teammate went a full second quicker with Italtrans Racing’s Roberts just a tick over half a second faster in the afternoon session.
Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Augusto Fernandez ended up leading the way on Friday in sunny England with his 2:04.573 besting Brit Jake Dixon by .187 of a second with the GASGAS Aspar rider crashing late in FP2. CAG Speed Up’s Alonso Lopez was third fastest on opening day.
Brit Alex Lowes was forced out of his home Grand Prix with a dislocated shoulder suffered in a FP1 highside.
Three riders are separated by just a single point in the Moto2 World Championship going into the British round with Celestino Vietti tied with Fernandez with Ai Ogura a point behind the pair in third. Roberts is currently sixth in the title chase; Beaubier is 15th and Kelly is 29th.
