Yamaha MotoGP team director Lin Jarvis is confident of improvements to the YZR-M1 engine for 2023, although he doesn’t believe it can totally close the gap to the more powerful bikes on the grid.
There will only be two Yamaha riders on the grid in 2023 which does not help combat the might of Ducati, who in every race will field four riders on the Desmosedici GP22 and a further four on the Desmosedici GP23.
This year Yamaha have made a number of changes to the development structure of the bike, including an increased investment in the aerodynamics department. Lin Jarvis told Corsedimoto several tests had taken place in the wind tunnel in Europe this year.
Despite his confidence for 2023, Jarvis admitted to SPEEDWEEK.com that he believes he can close some of the performance gap between the two bikes, but also acknowledged that it will be very difficult to completely close the gap between the bikes in terms of top speed :
– It is unlikely that we will be able to completely close the gap to the more powerful bikes by the start of the season in 2023. But we can certainly correct the mistakes we’ve made before the 2022 season. We started working with engineer Marmorini and his team last January. We are now starting to see the benefits of those changes.
