VALENTINO ROSSI has expressed surprise at the revelation that Jorge Lorenzo is reportedly scouting a potentially surprise return to Ducati for the 2020 MotoGP season.
Ahead of the Austrian MotoGP, Jack Miller sent the paddock into something of a media frenzy when he dropped the bombshell that put Lorenzo on the radar – apparently he was chasing his Pramac Ducati – and that’s the real reason, which he couldn’t pin down Paper about a MotoGP deal 2020.
Lorenzo, who is currently on the sidelines after suffering a back injury during the Dutch MotoGP in June, has nonetheless been busy behind the scenes weighing his options after a dismal start to his Repsol Honda career.
The three-time world champion was advised after some positive testing times to just trail Marc Marquez on the RC213V, but the reality is very different.

Regardless, Rossi – who formed a bitter rivalry with Lorenzo during the six years they spent partnering at Yamaha – believes Lorenzo needs to devote more time to his Honda quest rather than commit to another move any time soon.
“It is certainly a surprise for everyone to hear about the Ducati. When you talk about the results it makes some sense because Jorge has a lot of issues with the Honda and looks like he was strong with the Ducati last year.
“After having some falls, bad luck or injuries, he came in with a good pace. So from that point of view it makes sense. But I don’t know if it’s true.
“Anyway, Lorenzo is in the factory Honda and I think he can ride this bike somehow, maybe he needs to modify something and I think he was also very, very unlucky because especially the first injury with a flat -Track bike before the first test, which was a disaster for him because he arrived already injured and this moment of the season is crucial because you can ride a bike for six days without the pressure of a race weekend.
“And he doesn’t do the test and after that when you get to the race weekend everything is more difficult because you don’t have time you have to push.
“Then every time he made a mistake he would fall and get injured more so it’s a difficult situation at the moment but he’s in the Honda factory team and with a little more time and a little more luck he can be competitive.

Miller’s words, which no doubt anger Ducati, likely stem from a place of frustration for the Australian, who told the media just a week ago that he believes the delay was due to sorting through paperwork.
However, when it turned out that wasn’t the case, he leaked the rumors to the media in a move that could at best force Ducati to move permanently or at worst freeze it entirely…
