Fabio Quartararo is in command of the MotoGP World Championship after 11 rounds, but the table doesn’t reveal the difficulties and challenges that the rider and Monster Energy Yamaha have faced – mostly in terms of the engine, which leaves a lot to be desired in terms of power compared to the rivals. Eric Mahe, manager of the reigning champion, believes that this will change next year, and it is essential that this happens.
To GP Racing, the agent explained that Quartararo has to start from the top positions to be successful, giving the races dominated by the #20 as an example: ‘Today, everything is decided by a tenth of a second. Currently, the situation is delicate if Fabio does not start from the front, because it is impossible to overtake or even maintain the air cone on the straights. When Fabio takes the lead from the start, as in Portimão and Barcelona, there is no problem’.
Given the current scenario, Mahestressed the conviction that there will be engine improvements in 2023, as he said: ‘Therefore, it was essential to find a solution to improve the engine’s power and that will be done next year. Fabio leads the championship, so his merit is even greater. After all, it is more rewarding than if he had the best engine and the media coverage is even greater’.
