MotoGP: Spanish Grand Prix – Who was where

MotoGP continue their European leg of the season as they travel to the first of four Spanish rounds. Circuito de Jerez played host to the sixth round of what has already been a thrilling season.

Ducati Lenovo team:

Francesco Bagnaia:

What a perfect weekend for the Italian rider. After a relatively poor start to the year for the title favorite Bagnaia’s season may be back on track. A pole position on Saturday and then race winner on Sunday is a perfect weekend for ‘Pecco’. If he can keep this momentum up for the next couple of rounds he will back in championship contention.

Jack Miller:

Speculation around Miller’s 2023 ride still overshadows his races after rumors have him out of factory Ducati next year. However, a fourth place in qualifying and then a fifth place in the race is not too bad for Miller. The second highest Ducati after Bagnaia and a strong battle with two Spaniards made Millers race rather exciting.

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP:

Fabio Quartararo:

The championship leader has extended his lead over the field after an impressive Spanish Grand Prix. Quartararo was the only rider who could run with Bagnaia during the race. But he did lack a little something to exchange overtakes with the Ducati man. However, he will be pleased with another podium.

Franco Morbidelli:

Once again Morbidelli continues to struggle on the factory Yamaha. While his teammate is celebrating a podium the Italian is down in fifteenth place and scoring one point. Morbidelli needs to figure out how to ride this Yamaha before his MotoGP future becomes a doubt.

Aprilia Racing:

Alex Espargaro:

Another amazing weekend for Espargaro and his Aprilia team as they secure another podium position. Espargaro is making quite the habit of managing to stand on the rostrum in 2022. The Spaniard started from the front row and left his move from fifth to third place in the race until the final laps.

Maverick Vinales:

This weekend looked like the break through Grand Prix for Vinales up until qualifying on Saturday. After having to start from twelfth in the race it was clear to see that he would go backwards off the start. By the end of lap one Vinales was out of the top 20 and the points. By the end of the race he managed to secure two points in fourteenth position.

Lorenzo Savadori:

The Italian rider who is the Aprilia test rider did a decent job for Aprilia at Jerez. A 21st place finish was all that he could manage during the race but he would have learned valuable data on the experimental bike.

Repsol Honda Team:

Marc Marquez:

Marquez came to his home round and after Friday it looked like he was on for a shocker of a weekend. However, things changed on Saturday after some help from Miller in free practice three Marquez secured his place in the top 12 on the grid. Qualifying saw Marquez qualify up on the second row in fifth place. In the race he kept pace with Espargaro and Miller and finished in fourth overall.

Pol Espargaro:

The Spaniards time at Repsol Honda has not become any easier as he once again misses out on the top ten. After starting 13th and only managing an 11th place finish you have to wonder how secure Espargaro’s job is with Repsol Honda for 2023.

Stefan Bradl:

The Honda Racing Corporation test rider did not collect much race data for Honda. The German rider crashed out of the race.

Team Suzuki Ecstar:

Joan Mir:

Mir finishes his home round as the top Suzuki rider between the two Spanish teammates. After starting ninth Mir could only reach sixth as the five riders ahead had superior pace to him on the day. However, consistent race results may be vital for Mir’s future in MotoGP after some rumors about Suzuki grow in the paddock.

Alex Rins:

After a great Portuguese Grand Prix that made Rins look like a real championship contender the Spanish Grand Prix bought us down to earth. After another awful qualifying session Rins could only manage 19th place in the race.

LCR Honda:

Takaaki Nakagami:

The Japanese rider is fighting for his future in MotoGP as his start to 2022 has been anything but spectacular. However, a seventh place for Nakagami in Jerez is a decent result for how his season has started.

Alex Marquez:

The LCR Honda rider has also had a poor start to his 2022 season. However, Portugal was a good result but Spain saw a return to poor form for Marquez. The younger Marquez brother could only manage a 13th place finish around Jerez circuit.

Gresini Racing MotoGP:

Enea Bastianini:

A poor showing in Portugal put Bastianini’s title chances in doubt. But the Italian returned to a decent eighth place around the Jerez circuit. Bastianini was the highest satellite Ducati in the Spanish Grand Prix once again.

Fabio Di Giannantonio:

The young Italian once again continues his difficult start to life in MotoGP. After making the step up to MotoGP from Moto2 with Gresini Di Giannantonio is yet to score a point in the premier class. An 18th place result in Jerez is decent for how the Italians season has started.

Mooney VR46 Racing Team:

Marco Bezzecchi:

The MotoGP rookie had an incredible ride around Jerez. Bezzecchi looked strong all weekend and after qualifying eighth he backed it up with a ninth place finish. Bezzecchi now leads his teammate in the MotoGP standings.

Luca Marini:

Marini’s second year in MotoGP has not set the world alight just yet. A rather poor start to the season sees him now sat behind his rookie teammate in the standings. A 16th place result at Jerez is not what the doctor ordered for Marini.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing:

Brad Binder:

The South African leaves Jerez as the fastest KTM rider again. Binder struggles around Jerez historically but a tenth place result will satisfy the South African rider. Binder needs to work on his qualifying once again to get him further up the grid.

Miguel Oliveira:

The Portuguese rider was not far behind his teammate but was not on the same level. The factory KTM rider could only get a best result of 12th place around Jerez.

WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team:

Andrea Dovizioso:

The Italian rider continues to struggle on the Yamaha in his return to MotoGP. Dovizioso failed to match Quartararo’s speed around Jerez and could only manage 17th place. Things drastically need to change with Yamaha.

Darryn Binder:

Binder continues to struggle in his rookie MotoGP season with Yamaha. After a poor qualifying Binder crashed in the race as he was running at the back of the grid.

Tech3 KTM Factory Racing:

Remy Gardner:

Gardner had a poor round at the Jerez race. Gardner finished 20th overall in his rookie round around the Spanish round. However, Gardner has done a good job as he has been the only Tech3 rider at the last two races.

Pramac Racing:

George Martin:

At the start of the weekend it looked like Martin could be on for a podium place finish. However, Martin crashed out during the race but rejoined. After rejoining the race Martin finished 22nd overall.

Johann Zarco:

The French rider qualified on the second row in sixth place and looked strong. However, just like his teammate Zarco crashed out of the race but did not rejoin.
