Usually, to win a race, you have to pass under the checkered flag first. It was different with Marco Bezzecchi, because the driver from Romagna only found out in Parc Fermé that he had won the Red Bull Ring.
At that moment his team informed him about the penalty imposed on Jorge Martin, which gave the rider of Sky Racing Team VR46 his first success in Moto2. An unforgettable day for the Italian team, which scored a double by paring Vietti-Bezzecchi.
“What can I say, I’m very happy – Bezzecchi began – when I got to Parc Fermé and they informed me about the sentence imposed on Jorge, I was surprised. I was happy about second place, but it was all unexpected. Of course, I’ve always dreamed of winning in Moto2 and in the end I managed to make one of my dreams come true. Maybe it wasn’t like racing under the checkered flag first, but a win is always special. “
In the race, the Romagna driver went beyond the long haul and in a way revealed himself to be “Diesel” …
“It was a big challenge with Martin. I tried to be calm at the beginning of the race knowing I had good pace. Then I got closer and closer to him, but I was tired of staying behind him without being able to attack. They took the board out of the garage for me, but I didn’t want to look at it. I tried to find an opening, but there was no more space. I also tried to follow his line and take his slipstream, but I had problems braking. In the end, however, everything went well ”.
What happened behind the scenes when the race was over …?
“I hugged Jorge and said:“ It was like the old days ”, remembering the Moto3 races where we dueled for victory so often!
There’s now a big party at Sky, thanks in part to the success of Celestino Vietti …
“I told him on Friday that he was ready to win. I saw the fire in him and it all cheered me on. As I said, I’m happy because I dreamed of this result and thank the whole team. ” The last few months have not been easy for me, especially after the crash with the dirt bike. Unfortunately, the lockdown slowed my recovery, also because I had more problems walking than getting on the bike. That story is now a thing of the past and I can’t wait to race at Misano. Two races await us on the same track and we have to be ready ”.
