The rider transfer market has taken a new turn after Suzuki’s decision to retire from MotoGP because there are two big hitters like Joan Mir and Alex Rins now available. The two riders are obviously looking for a seat for next year, evaluating all the options still free.
Of course, Honda is one of them and team manager Alberto Puig, interviewed by motogp.com, confirmed it.
“Obviously they contacted everyone, they will contact us also and of course we will listen to what they have to say. We’ve talked to each other a few times before,” he said.
This does not mean that Honda is in any hurry to close a deal, because they know they are holding all the cards. The factory Ducati and Yamaha teams are virtually all set and therefore HRC is the best option for Mir and Rins, without forgetting Aprilia, with Vinales’ place still in the balance.
“We decided some time ago to wait a little bit longer, explore the various possibilities, and we are not going to be in a hurry – explained Puig – But then suddenly this story appeared, which was quite surprising for everyone, but it will not change our target and concept of what we wanted. There are two more options, but our approach was planned before this happened and it will not modify our strategy. We have something in mind, we have to check how the results and the races are going. Each team or company has to do what it believes is the best for itself”.
