The story between Maverick Viñales and Yamaha ended less happily and prematurely. According to Assen, it was communicated that the driver would leave the Japanese manufacturer at the end of the championship if he had a contract for 2022, but the hiring of the driver at the end of the Styrian GP meant Viñales would never climb an M1 again.
Speaking to GP Racing, Massimo Meregalli explained that his former driver was unable to react positively to external pressure or in situations that somehow bother him. The official regretted the end of that partnership, arguing that this double-awaited divorce may have been best for the maker itself.
‘Unfortunately, after what happened in Austria, we ran into a new problem that resulted in our parting sooner than expected. […] We all know Maverick has talent, but we also know his weaknesses. When a problem arises or something affects him, he loses and has a hard time responding positively. Without saying more, I think Maverick is having a hard time dealing with pressure. Then he goes and accuses you of sabotage. In any case, we didn’t need a story like that, maybe it’s better for everyone that he’s gone, ”said the Yamaha MotoGP Team Director.
