Miguel Oliveira has announced that he has received a proposal from Yamaha to join his team for the 2022 MotoGP World Championship, but says he has committed to becoming a champion with KTM.
The Portuguese’s stock has continued to rise since his surprising first win for the Tech 3 KTM in Styria’s MotoGP in 2020, making him an attractive candidate for Yamaha looking to fill at least one vacant seat in 2022.
In fact, Maverick Vinales’ impending exit from the Yamaha Factory Racing Team means the manufacturer is looking for a high-profile replacement. Yamaha is expected to promote Franco Morbidelli to the factory team alongside Fabio Quartararo, with each newcomer taking the Petronas SRT Yamaha ride.

However, with Valentino Rossi still undecided about his future, there is a chance that Yamaha will have to fill both rides for 2022.
As such, it has picked a number of potential candidates including Moto2 star Raul Fernandez and Toprak Razgatlioglu. However, with KTM keen to hold onto its protégé Fernandez and Razgatlioglu reportedly declining a formal offer to spend two more years in WorldSBK, Yamaha must cast the net wider.
Among other things, Oliveira is selected, who has now achieved two more victories since his first Styrian triumph with KTM and is considered the outside tip for this year’s title. The Portuguese was promoted to the works team for 2021, but without the duration of this contract being communicated at that time, his plans for 2022 have yet to be officially confirmed by KTM.
However, Oliveira has now announced that he has actually signed a two-year deal with KTM that includes 2022 and he has no plans to ditch it in favor of a move to Yamaha.
“The market and the contracts, especially in this day and age, show this, and we already have one or the other case where there is no will of either party that the driver is not with the team or the team number of the driver wants these contracts to be broken for longer, ”he was quoted as saying during a media call in his home country, Portugal.
“Today a signed contract is worth what it’s worth. I’ve had my commitment with my team for two years since last year and I won’t take that word back.
“Of course that [Maverick] The situation in Viñales made the talks a bit nervous for the future, I was also approached in this way, but as I said, my focus is on my team.
“It’s a great team and I think I can become world champion with it and I have a contract and until I win it while I’m here there is a lot to do.”
