Darryn Binder and John McPhee will be competing in their penultimate Moto3 races with the Petronas Sprinta Racing Team this weekend.

While Binder will only be the second rider in the last 11 years to jump straight from Moto3 to MotoGP – Jack Miller was the other, John McPhee will also change teams next year.
The Scot was confirmed along with former Petronas Sprinta teammate Ayumi Sasaki in the Sterilgarda team led by Max Biaggi.
But before both riders leave the Petronas project, which is leaving MotoGP and its lower classes at the end of the season, Portimao is hosting its second round of the season this weekend, a race that Binder and McPhee are hoping to do better than last April Year.

Both men had to start from the pit lane for irresponsible driving in Binder’s case, while for McPhee it was a pit lane start and an additional 10-second time penalty for a scuffle with Jeremy Alcoba at the previous run in Qatar.
Binder has not been on the podium since his third and second place in the first two races, but the South African wants to end the season “as best as possible”.

“I’m looking forward to going back to Portimao, although it’s a very different time of year now than April,” said Binder.
“When we were there for the first time at the beginning of the season, I unfortunately had to start the race from the pit lane and, to be honest, it was a race to forget.
“I’m looking forward to going back and doing a second try. There are only two races left in the season and I just want to do my absolute best to end the year as well as possible.” . “
While McPhee has also struggled consistently for podiums this year – he only had one podium taken two rounds ago at COTA, the 27-year-old is confident he’s got a good result as he struggled the first time feels “really strong”.
McPhee said: “Portimao is a circuit that I really enjoy, despite being one of the most technical and difficult circuits of the season.
“I think now that we’ve been there twice and I’ve got a little more experience we should do well.
“The last time we were there we had a bit of a strange race that started from the pit lane, but I felt really strong and was fast on the bike.
“We now have two races ahead of us in the season and I want to finish both as strong as possible and give my crew the results they deserve.”
