Ramon Aurin will become Pol Espargarò’s right-hand man for the 2021 season. The Spanish crew chief has undisputed experience in the MotoGP paddock, having worked with several riders over the past few years: Jack Miller, Jorge Lorenzo and Alex Marquez. Aurin and his team have been striving to make Espargarò competitive since the first races. As he explained, the team will work to build the rider’s confidence so they can feel comfortable at RC213V 2021 as soon as possible.
What goals do you think Pol can achieve in 2021?
“Our goal is clear. We want to get the podium in the first races and then fight for the championship. Pol is not a beginner. He’s a guy with a lot of experience in MotoGP and the Honda is a winning bike. We definitely have to push for the championship. “
What do you think Pol could bring to the Repsol Honda team?
“Pol has a lot of experience with different motorcycles. He’s ridden a Yamaha, KTM, and from the start managed to make a huge improvement over the KTM. So he can definitely bring some experience and some ideas that we can adapt to Honda to improve our bike. “
When working with a new driver what is the most important area to work on first?
“The first thing we need to understand is how each driver explains their feelings. They all have their own path for each and every impression. First of all, we have to understand what you want to change on the bike as soon as you feel something about it. This strengthens the relationship between mechanic and driver and makes it easier to understand what they need. Then it is important for us to understand what we need to change in order to adapt it to his riding behavior when Pol explains his problems with the bike after we have made the bike suitable for his position. “
What changes are made when a new driver joins the team?
“The first thing we have to change is the position of the bike. Every driver is a different height and weight and we need to know exactly what they need and how many parts need to be changed. It’s going to be tough earlier this year because we haven’t had the Sepang tests. We’re going to Qatar almost on a standard bike. So we need to work with Honda to have the various parts needed to modify the bike based on Pol’s bodywork.”
How has your part of the garage grown over the past three years?
“We have changed a lot of drivers in three years. This has given us the experience we need to be able to convert the bike in a short period of time. The guys on the team have a lot of experience making different parts to adjust the driver’s position on the track so we don’t always have to wait for the parts to be ready. This will be of great help in quickly converting Pol’s bike. “
What do you need to prepare for a season to compete in the MotoGP World Championship? How do you prepare yourself and your team?
“The most important thing for a team is to form a great team and, above all, to let it grow together! When we change a member or two, of course, in the case of the driver, we are talking about one of the main components. Then we have to work on increasing the team spirit. To do this, of course, we have to be together on the various tests, and the experience in the tests will improve our feeling and understanding for one another. “
