Spielberg, Austria, August 15, 2021 – Pecco Bagnaia took an excellent second place in the Austrian MotoGP GP that took place at the Red Bull Ring this afternoon. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider put in a masterly performance in a race made difficult by the rain that began to fall four laps to go.

From the front row, starting from third on the grid, Pecco moved up to first place and led for 23 laps while deftly defending against attacks by Quartararo and then Márquez. When it started to rain, the Italian unfortunately fell back to fourth place, but quickly managed to swap bikes and returned to the pits together with the drivers in the leading group. Pecco returned to the race in eleventh place with the Desmosedici GP in a wet configuration and soon caught up with the remaining riders on slick tires, overtook them and got back to second in just one lap to take his fourth podium of the season . Thanks to today’s result, Pecco climbs to second place in the overall standings, 47 points behind the leader – Fabio Quartararo.

It was an unfortunate race for his team-mate Jack Miller. Starting from sixth on the grid, the Australian got off to a good start, but after a few laps the lack of grip didn’t allow him to push and eventually fell back to eighth place. When it started raining, Miller was one of the first to step into the pits to change his bike, but the strategy chosen did not allow him to use it. The Australian crossed the finish line in eleventh and is fifth in the championship after today’s race, 76 points behind the top of the table.

Jorge Martín, who took pole position yesterday and won the Styrian GP, which was also held at the Red Bull Ring last Sunday, completed the podium in Brad Binder’s race. The Pramac Racing Team rider finished today’s race in third place, bringing the number of Ducatis on the stage to two. After the Austrian GP, the manufacturer from Bologna now takes first place in the constructors’ championship, while the Ducati Lenovo Team takes second place in the team’s standings.

• Francesco Bagnaia (# 63 Ducati Lenovo Team) – 2nd

“Today we were close to victory again, but I’m still happy! We did our best and did a good job. When I was in the lead in the dry as well as in the wet, we handled the situation well. I let Marquez through when I saw the first raindrops to see what he was going to do because I didn’t know if I should go back and change bikes. I saw a lot of drivers not stopping and I thought I made a mistake while going from flag to flag. After the first lap on the rain tires, I found my rhythm and was able to overtake many drivers in order to achieve second place. We will try again! The next race is in Silverstone and I am sure that we can fight for a good result there too! “

• Jack Miller (# 43 Ducati Lenovo Team) – 11.

“This morning I had good pace in the warm-up, but I couldn’t repeat it in the race. After the start I tried to stay close to the front group, but after a few laps I got grip problems and lost a few positions. When I saw the first raindrops, I thought about going back to change my bike, but only one lap later it started to rain heavily. We tried it anyway: Those weren’t the results we expected from these two races in Austria, but now we have to move forward and come back stronger at Silverstone. “

The Ducati Lenovo Team riders will be back on track for the British GP at the Silverstone Circuit in about two weeks from August 27th to 29th.
