MotoGP: Jorge Martin takes surprise pole at the Styrian GP

Despite the Pramac Racing rider’s exceptional time, he was less than a tenth ahead of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP).

Martin wrote his own little piece of history when he not only secured his second pole of the year with 1: 22.994, but also set a new lap record at the Red Bull Ring.

It was a good day for Ducati with Martin and Bagnaia in first and second places with Jack Miller and Johann Zarco, who were fourth and sixth just behind them.

FIM MotoGP World Champion Joan Mir will be fifth for Suzuki Ecstar.

Meanwhile, seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi, who announced his retirement at the end of the season earlier this week, will start as 17th.

Multiple world champion Marc Marquez, who made a welcome return to the paddock of the FIM MotoGP World Championship after his recovery, starts in eighth place, while his Repsol Honda teammate starts in 15th place.

In clear conditions during the day, lap times at the Red Bull Ring fell as the FIM MotoGP World Championship battled first for a place in the top ten and later in the day for pole.

The Red Bull Ring produced a brilliant Q2 session when Quartararo of Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP was initially a strong contender for pole.

Although his best time was canceled because the track limit was exceeded, he secured third place on the grid for the ninth time out of ten GPs so far this season, while his team-mate Maverick Vinales, who had a tough start to Q2, ended up ninth on the grid.

A stunning round from @ 88jorgemartin gave him some serious confidence 💪
